CURRENT TOPIC: Environmentally Friendly Fluids

TITLE: Estolides – The Latest in High Viscosity Biosynthetic Base Oils

AUTHORS/INSTITUTIONS: J. Bredsguard, Biosynthetic Technologies, Indianapolis, IN. UNITED STATES;

Body: Estolides are an environmentally acceptable base oil that is sometimes referred to as a “biosynthetic.” Over the last few years, they have gained recognition for their performance and environmental qualities, allowing lubricant companies to formulate quality products that are seen as environmentally friendly. They are also biodegradable and nontoxic, yet have strong performance characteristics. Recent developments in Biosynthetic Base Oils have led to a high viscosity base oil (ISO VG 680) that is both bio-based and biodegradable. The product is based on the estolide technology giving the oil the expected high viscosity index and low volatility common to other estolide oils. The product is expected to be ideal for use in grease and gear oils, offering formulators a new quality option when developing performance and/or environmentally friendly products.

TITLE: Biosynthetic Technologies – Delivering Innovations for a Sustainable Future

AUTHORS/INSTITUTIONS: Mark Miller Biosynthetic Technologies, Indianapolis, IN. UNITED STATES;

Body: Biosynthetic Technologies (BT) specializes in developing and commercializing high-performance, sustainable chemical ingredients that can be used in a variety of applications. BT products are bio-based, biodegradable, and non-toxic. Lubricants are BT’s first target market with current R&D efforts focused on developing a wide range of biosynthetic base oil viscosities using the estolide technology. Estolides offer lubricant formulators a powerful combination of both performance and environmental benefits providing them with the tool kit necessary to design cutting-edge environmentally friendly products. BT’s first commercial biosynthetic base oil is BT75, an ISO VG 680 product, with samples available today and large-scale manufacturing coming online Q3 2019.
